कार्तिक शुक्ल पक्ष की प्रतिपदा से सप्तमी तक भगवन क्रिशन ने गोवर्धन पर्वत को उपनी ऊँगली पे उठा लिया ताकि भगवन इन्द्र नें जो अति वृष्टि की उससे गो-गोप-गोपिओं की राज्क्षा हो सके. आठवें दिन भगवन इन्द्र को अपनी भूल का पता चला और उन्हों ने भगवन कृष्ण से माफ़ी मांगी. कामधेनु नें तब भगवन कृष्ण का अभिषेक किया और तब से भगवन कृष्ण का नाम गोविन्द पड़ा.
उसी समें से कार्तिक शुक्ल अष्टमी को गोपाष्टमी मनाई जाती है.
